The history of European habitation dates back to the early 1500’s however, long before the arrival of European settlers, Ambergris Caye was home to large population so Mayan people who lived throughout much of Central America at this time.

Bacalar Chico Marine and Wildlife Reserve – One of the newest reserves in Belize, it is accessible only by sea and is located at the northern tip of the Caye. Popular activities here include diving, swimming, birding, fishing and of course water sports. The park encompasses intraisland lagoons, mud flats, sink holes, mangroves forests, savannahs, semideciduous forest and many animals in addition to being historic Mayan sites as well.
The Belize Barrier Reef – Located just a half mile off the leeward side of the island, the Belize Barrier Reef is by far the most visited attraction of the Caye today. The longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and second longest in the world, it is a popular place for diving and enjoying the underwater world. Trenches, ridges, corals, diverse sealife and wrecks present plenty of opportunities for enjoying your time.
National parks, marine reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are found all throughout Belize and Ambergris Caye. Home to over 540 species of birds and many other creatures, visitors should be prepared to see many wild animals. Please remember, even the smallest and least “harmful” creatures can be dangerous when threatened. For their safety and yours, look and don’t touch.
