Immortalized in Barry Manilow’s classic song, it is easy to see why you will likely have this song running through your head as you arrive at Copacabana Beach. The first beach in Rio, this iconic one still holds as one of the best in the city and how could it not? With its 2 ½ miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains to either side, the surroundings are visually stunning, and the people watching alone as you lay back will keep you entertained for hours.
Ipanema Beach also has a catchy tune written about it. Just a little past the Copacabana it is in a more upscale neighborhood. Here you can buy anything that you forgot from the vendors that stroll along the beach and perhaps something’s you didn’t even think of, like a coconut. There is little more pleasant than the sweet and refreshing flavor after a day baking in the sun. The mountains tower over both ends of the beach, and in between you’ll find gorgeous sun worshippers, and even a volleyball or soccer game or two.
Barra da Tijuca Beach will hold many of the Summer Olympics of 2016 events. The beach is the longest in all of Rio and encompasses 11 miles of soft warm sand and crashing waves. This is the place to go if you like surfing of any kind as it is optimal for long and short board, body boarding and kite and wind surfing. If you’ve never done any of them you can partake in one of the many surf schools located along the beach.
These are just a few of the amazing beaches to hit when you are in Rio to truly understand the Rio beach life and what makes it so important that has been preserved for generations to come in song. You are sure to have an amazing time at one or all of them, and get the true Rio beach experience.
